LEWISBURG, Pa. – Two weeks after tying the school-record in the high jump, sophomore Nicholas Lombardo topped his mark, recording a leap of 6-11 to set a new program-record on Saturday at the Gulden Invitational at Gerhard Fieldhouse.
The Gulden Invitational was changed to a scored meet in 2012, and the Bucknell men have won it every year since. The Bison won eight events and scored 82 points, while turning in seven IC4A-qualifying performances.
“Our men competed with a lot of excitement today and we got some nice early season performances,” says head coach Kevin Donner. “The meet was a good win, but more importantly, we got a great training effect and guys were really there for each other.”
In addition to winning the high jump, Lombardo also captured the title in the long jump with a 23-3 ¼ effort. His mark was the ninth-best performance in program history. He also finished as the runner-up in the triple jump.
Bucknell pole-vaulters have dominated home meets this season, and that trend continued with junior Adam Mszanski, who won the event with a IC4A-qualifying mark of 15-3.
Seniors Anthony Menza and John Westwood also won their events with IC4A-qualfying times. Menza placed first in the 500-meter with a time of 1:05.95, bettering the 1:06.20 standard. Westwood competed in the 1000-meter, crossing the line in 2:27.52.
Junior Luke Guigliano captured the 3000-meter title, finishing in 8:38.65. He was also the runner-up in the mile.
Westwood, along with junior Jordan Jackson and sophomores Kyle Adams and David Frering, qualified for the IC4A's with a first-place time of 7:53.22 in the 4x800 relay. The 4x400 relay quartet of Ashkettle, Menza, senior Griffin Robertson and freshman Wade Heidel also qualified for the IC4A's with a time of 3:22.72.
Senior Olu Shoyoye (shot put) and junior Jordan Jackson (800m) each finished as the runner-up in their event with IC4A-qualfying marks. Shoyoye set a new personal-best in the weight throw with a heave of 57-8 ¼. His performance was the seventh-best effort in school history. Jackson finished his race in 1:56.05.
Lombardo earned the event's field MVP award, while Andrew Adighibe of Shippensburg was named the event's track MVP.
Bucknell will send runners to two separate events next weekend as one group will stay home for the Bison Open & Multi, while the other group will make the trip to the Penn State National Invitational.
