NEWVILLE, Pa. – It was business as usual for the Bucknell women's cross country team as it won yet another race Saturday. The Bison, competing in the 4k portion of the Dickinson Long-Short Invitational, cruised to the team title by taking seven of the top 10 spots, including a first-place finish by Kate Scott. Official team scores were unavailable.
Bucknell's title came in a field of 29 teams. Elizabethtown and Dickinson were the only other teams to place a runner in the top 10. The Bison defended their title in the 4k race from a season ago and have now won six of their past eight regular season races dating back to the beginning of last season.
Scott took the individual title with a time of 14:07, crossing the line five seconds before teammate Sarah Chandler. Christine Bendzinski and Deanna Godby took third and fourth, respectively, while Nora Adams, Kate VanNess and Allison Billas finished in order from sixth through eighth. Freshman Christine O'Kane placed 11th for the second time in her first two collegiate races.
“Considering it has been a high volume and high intensity couple of weeks, I was very pleased with our results,” said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. “The 4k distance is a good tune-up for next week's meet at Louisville, and the hilly course will prepare us well for the Patriot League Championships next month at Colgate. We got exactly what we were hoping for.”
Elizabethtown's Casey Quinto was the top non-Bucknell runner, finishing 21 seconds after Scott with a time of 14:28. Lydia Dearie also placed in the top 10 for Elizabethtown, coming in at ninth, while Dickinson's Mackenzie Shelgren was 10th.
The Bison follow the Dickinson Invitational with two events next weekend. One group of runners will compete at Lehigh's Paul Short Run on Friday, Oct. 2, while another group will run at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Oct. 3.
