LEWISBURG, Pa. – Playing its 100th all-time game at Kinney Natatorium, the Bucknell men's water polo team did what it has done more often than not in the facility – win. The Bison hosted Toronto on Sunday morning and beat the Varsity Blues 14-11 behind three goals and two assists from freshman Marko Djordjevic. Nine different Bison scored goals as Bucknell matched its season-high total.
The win helped the Bison improve to 6-2 overall this season and 4-0 during this weekend's Bison Invitational. Bucknell is now 69-31 all-time in Kinney Natatorium, which opened in 2003.
The Bison led or were tied for all but 2 minutes and 19 seconds in the high-scoring affair. A 4-0 run in a span of less than three minutes from the end of the third quarter to the beginning of the fourth turned a 9-8 deficit into a 12-9 advantage. Bucknell extended its lead to as much as four goals in the fourth quarter and ended the game on a 6-2 run.
The Bison were also strong early, opening a 5-1 lead when Jeff Hagen scored the second of his two goals on the opening possession of the second quarter. Bucknell weathered a 4-0 Toronto run late in the first half and early in the second that evened the score at 6-6.
Nate Hunter and Stefan Aleksic scored two goals apiece, giving the Bison four multi-goal scorers in the game.
Bucknell's current four-game winning streak is its longest since winning seven in a row last October.
The Bison will wrap up their weekend Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Washington & Jefferson. With a win, Bucknell will be off to its best start since 2011, head coach John McBride's first season with the program.
