LEWISBURG, Pa. – Four former Bucknell men's cross country greats were named to the Patriot League 25th Anniversary Team, which was released by the conference on Friday. Norbert Berenyi '91, Matt Deardorff '92, David Bronfenbrenner '00 and Bryan Johnston '03, all individual Patriot League champions during their time with the Bison, were included in the list of 25 former conference runners.
Berenyi was a senior when the Patriot League was formed as an all-sports conference in 1990. An East Coast Conference champion the year before, he made it two titles in a row by winning the inaugural Patriot League Championships race. His first-place finish led the Bison to the first-ever Patriot League team title. Berenyi was also a key member of the 1988 team that qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Deardorff spent just two seasons in the Patriot League. He joined Berenyi on the 1990 championship team and also guided Bucknell to a team title at the 1991 Patriot League Championships by winning the individual crown. He went on to finish 60th at the NCAA Championships that year. He earned All-Patriot League honors in each of his two seasons in the conference.
Deardorff racked up academic honors during his time with the Bison. He was a two-time Academic All-American, two-time Academic All-District, two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned the ECAC Medallion for academic and athletic excellence. His hard work in the classroom paid off as he went on to earn MD and PhD degrees at the University of Pennsylvania, where he eventually became an assistant professor of pediatrics.
Bronfenbrenner was one of the top runners during a great era of Bucknell cross country, earning three All-Patriot League titles while leading the team to three league championships. He won the 1999 individual title. Following his time at Bucknell, Bronfenbrenner embarked on his dream of running across the United States and was joined by former teammate Scott Sehon on the trip.
Johnston was the 2002 Patriot League champion, winning the title his senior year. He was First Team All-Patriot League in each of his final two seasons with the team, while also excelling in the classroom. He was selected as an Academic All-American twice and also earned Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors and Academic All-District recognition.
