LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's rowing senior Kathryn Oram (Mendham, N.J./Oak Knoll School of Holy Child) recently had the opportunity to compete at the World Rowing U-23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The multiple-year member of the Bison lightweight eight who has also rowed with the second varsity eight, Oram rowed in the lightweight double scull with Jennifer Sager, a senior at Trinity College who was a member of the team's varsity eight which won a gold medal at the Division III NCAA National Championship in May.
Oram and Sager rowed with Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia this summer. They earned an automatic bid to the U-23 World Championships, which took place in late July.
Representing the United States, Oram and Sager placed 14th overall in Bulgaria. The pair raced three times, finishing sixth in their initial heat and improved to fifth in the repechage after overcoming some early nerves. They placed second in the third final, behind only Japan while beating crews from Norway, Bulgaria, Thailand and Denmark. New Zealand won the top final and took home the gold medal.
“My first two weeks at Vesper were spent rowing, sweating, and adjusting to life in Philadelphia,” commented Oram, an international relations major. “It was daunting heading into a boathouse where Olympic-caliber athletes train.
“During each race, Jen and I improved tremendously. In Bulgaria, we learned how to race together and also how to approach the competition. I am glad I took the chance to race for the United States. My small world of Bucknell rowing was blown open. I met many outstanding athletes and coaches and would encourage anyone given the chance to race at such a level to do so with confidence and openness.”
