LEWISBURG, Pa. – Recent Bucknell graduate and four-year member of the Bison women's rowing team Kumari Lewis (Atlantic Beach, Fla./Peddie School) has had the opportunity to compete with Vesper Boat Club this summer. The three-time CRCA National Scholar-Athlete recently rowed with Vesper at the U.S. Rowing Club Nationals and came home with two gold medals.
The Club Nationals took place over the span of five days in mid-July on Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio. Lewis was part of the Vesper intermediate 8+ and intermediate 4+ boats that finished first in their finals races.
The intermediate 4+ placed first in all three of its races on its way to gold, while the intermediate 8+ was first in its heat and finals race. Vesper captured the team points award with 14 gold medals and 32 medals overall in its first appearance at the event.
“Rowing for Vesper this summer has been an incredible experience that I am extremely grateful to have been part of,” commented Lewis. “It has allowed me to further develop my skills and speed on the water, and continue competing on a national level. This group of women is inspirational. To come from multiple schools – many of which compete against each other during the academic year – and successfully work 'All Together', as is the Vesper motto, is absolutely phenomenal. Our success at Club Nationals is a reflection of the hard work and dedication that every woman on this team puts in every single day.”
Lewis, who was a member of Bucknell's varsity eight this past season, was a First Team All-Patriot League selection. She also earned Second Team CRCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors.
Lewis will continue to compete with Vesper this summer as she will row at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta Aug. 2-9 in St. Catharines, Ontario.
“I am very excited for the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta,” said Lewis. “I am looking forward to representing Bucknell and Vesper in the U-23 8+ and culminating my competitive rowing career with a successful week of racing.”
