LEWISBURG, Pa. – A three-sport coach along with star athletes from women's basketball, men's lacrosse and wrestling comprise the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2015. The honorees include former softball, basketball and volleyball coach Terrie Grieb, hoops standout Desire Almind '04, wrestling All-American Bryan Burns '91 and lacrosse All-American and all-time scoring leader Chris Cara '05.
The 37th Hall of Fame class will be inducted at a dinner ceremony on Friday, Oct. 23 as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities. The new Hall of Famers will also be re-introduced at halftime of the Bucknell-Georgetown football game on Saturday, Oct. 24.
The Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to honor the very best in the history of Bison athletics. This year's induction brings to 245 the number of outstanding student-athletes, coaches, administrators and friends of Bucknell whose contributions are forever preserved in the Hall of Fame.
TERRIE GRIEB arrived at Bucknell in 1978 as a young coach, and 38 years later she is still a member of the Bucknell Athletics administrative team. Grieb began her tenure as head volleyball and softball coach as well as assistant basketball coach. During the 1980-81 academic year, she was head coach of all three sports, making her the only woman in Bucknell history to coach three sports in one season.
All told, Grieb served as head volleyball coach from 1978-84, head softball coach from 1979-90 and 1992-2000, head women's basketball coach in 1980-81, and assistant women's basketball coach from 1978-80 and 1981-91.
Grieb's greatest success came on the softball diamond, where she became the program's very first varsity head coach in the spring of 1979. She was a six-time conference coach of the year while amassing a program-record 307 victories in 21 seasons. Grieb guided the Bison to the 1997 Patriot League title. Eight of her former softball players are already enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Grieb was also Bucknell's first varsity volleyball coach and won 90 matches in seven years with that program, highlighted by a 22-11 season in 1983.
Grieb retired from coaching in 2000 and took over as associate director of athletics for business and team services, a post that she still holds.
DESIRE ALMIND '04 was a three-time All-Patriot League forward with the Bison women's basketball team. She had a magnificent senior year, when she averaged 17.3 points per game and ranked second nationally in rebounding at 13.1 per contest. Almind broke Bucknell and Patriot League rebounding records with 390 that season, and she also produced a school-record 19 double-doubles.
Almind graduated with 1,581 points and 873 rebounds, both of which ranked third in Bucknell history at the time. She currently ranks third in points and fourth in rebounds. She also ranks fourth in career scoring average (14.5), fourth in blocked shots (108) and sixth in steals (213).
Almind was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2000-01, and a year later she helped lead the Bison to their very first Patriot League championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. Almind scored 15 points in the league title game at Holy Cross.
Wrestler BRYAN BURNS '91 was a three-time conference champion, a three-time NCAA qualifier, and an All-American in the 190-pound weight class as a senior in 1991. Burns captured East Coast Conference titles at 190 pounds in 1989 and 1990, and then he won the East Coast Wrestling Association championship in 1991. He won three matches at NCAAs in both 1990 and 1991, and his eighth-place finish in 1991 made him the second All-American in the history of the Bison wrestling program.
Burns helped lead Bucknell to runner-up team finishes at the ECC Championships in 1989 and 1990, and he went on to finish his career with an 81-30-1 individual record. He was ranked third on Bucknell's all-time wins list at the time of his graduation, and he now ranks 14th. Burns' 32 victories in 1990-91 was a school record at the time.
A decade after his graduation, CHRIS CARA '05 remains the all-time points leader in Bucknell and Patriot League history with 249 points on 111 goals and 138 assists. His assist total is tied with Hall of Famer Peter von Hoffmann for the Bucknell record, and Cara is the only player in program history to record at least 100 goals and 100 assists. As a junior in 2004, Cara led the nation in scoring with 78 points on 38 goals and 40 assists. The 78 points were one shy of Hall of Famer Justin Zackey's team record, and the 40 assists remained the school record until broken by David Dickson in 2013.
Cara was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year as a junior and senior, and he was also the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2002. He earned All-Patriot League honors all four years, and he was picked as an Honorable Mention All-American in 2004 and a Third Team All-American in 2005. That made him the first Bison to earn All-America honors above the Honorable Mention level since von Hoffmann all the way back in 1979. In his four years at Bucknell, the Bison went 19-6 in Patriot League play and shared the regular-season title three times.
As a senior, Cara was one of 16 national finalists for the Tewaaraton Trophy, which is given to the national player of the year. Cara played in the North-South All-Star game and was taken by the Long Island Lizards in the third round of the 2005 Major League Lacrosse Draft.
