LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bonnie Skrenta has announced her resignation as head coach of the Bucknell softball team after three years with the Bison, including two that ended with an appearance in the Patriot League championship game.
“I would like to thank Bucknell University for the opportunity to lead the softball program over the past three seasons,” said Skrenta. “I am proud of our teams' accomplishments and specifically would like to thank the current and past Bucknell softball players who have given so much to the program during this journey. The student-athletes at Bucknell have been amazing and made a tremendous impact on my life and coaching career. As I take this next step in my career to the corporate world, I will always cherish my time as a collegiate coach. I wish Bucknell and Bucknell Softball all the success in the future.”
“I would like to thank Bonnie for her three years of outstanding service to Bucknell Athletics and the Bison softball program,” said director of athletics and recreation John Hardt. “The softball team has achieved great success under Bonnie's leadership, and we wish her all the best in her future pursuits.”
Skrenta was named Patriot League Coach of the Year this season after guiding Bucknell to a program-record 35 wins and its third straight appearance in the conference tournament. During her three seasons with the team, she led the Bison to a record of 79-76, including a 33-23 mark in league play.
Two Bison players won major awards under the Skrenta's direction. Cydnee Sanders was named the Patriot League Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year after batting .482 in 2014. Kristen Zahn was voted the conference's Player of the Year this season.
In addition to the win total, the Bison set numerous other program records this season, including hits, doubles, runs, RBIs and strikeouts (pitching). Individually, Zahn drove in a record 53 runs, Sanders set a new program mark with 46 runs scored, and Amanda Fazio set single-season records in stolen bases (26), wins (19) and strikeouts (164).
A national search will begin immediately to identify Bucknell's next head softball coach.
