JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Christian Lupica may have been one hurdle away from qualifying for the NCAA Championships as he wrapped up an outstanding career with a 17th-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA East Preliminary Meet. The three day event concluded on Saturday at North Florida's Hodges Stadium.
”Christian had a great start and good rhythm,” said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. “Coming off the last hurdle he was sitting fourth in his heat and then lost balance and stumbled across the line in seventh. It was a tough break for him.”
Lupica has had a memorable career for the Bison. He has a Bucknell record time of 13.80 in the event and has come close to that time on numerous other occasions. Matching that time would have put him third in the East Region, which would have easily met the top-12 qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships.
“He has worked so hard and has been the face of our program for the past three years,” Donner said. “He will go down as one of the greatest track and field athletes in school history.”
Just weeks before the NCAA East Preliminary Meet, Lupica earned the Christy Mathewson Award, which is given to the top senior athlete at Bucknell. He leaves the Bison program as a seven-time Patriot League champion and holds school records in seven events, as well as the school's facility record in the 110-meter hurdles. He qualified for the NCAA regional meet three times and was selected to the Academic All-Patriot League Team four times.
