WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior Nick Bybel and sophomore Bryan Adams posted singles wins, but Bucknell fell to defending Patriot League champion Army 5-2 on Sunday at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
The Bison fell to 10-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Black Knights improved to 15-8 overall and 6-0 in league play with their sixth straight win. They haven't lost a Patriot League regular season match since March 22, 2013, a stretch of 19 matches.
“We came out a little slow and gave them a 3-0 lead, which is tough to come back from, but we really battled hard to get back in the match,” said Bucknell head coach Craig Schwartz. “We need to have a short memory and get prepared for a tough match against Lehigh tomorrow.”
Bucknell is just the second Patriot League team to score two points on Army this season. Bybel was a three-set winner over Sam Lampman at No. 1 singles, while Adams took down Grant Riechmann at No. 3 after coming out on top in a pair of set tiebreaks. Both Lampman and Riechmann were Second Team All-Patriot League selections a year ago.
Bybel was pushed to three sets for the first time during his 16-match winning streak. He is 33-3 this year, including a 17-1 mark during the spring season.
The Bison will play a Patriot League opponent for the third time in as many days when they host Lehigh on Monday at 3 p.m.
