PRINCETON, N.J. – Just five days after losing to nationally ranked Michigan by a 13-4 score, the Bucknell women's water polo team was much more competitive against the Wolverines during Friday's quarterfinals of the CWPA Championship. The seventh-seeded Bison were within two goals of the second-seeded and 18th-ranked Wolverines in the second half and ended up falling by an 11-8 score.
Taylor Barnett scored the second of her two goals for Bucknell (12-13) midway through the third quarter to make the score 8-6. However, Michigan (19-11) tallied the first three goals in the fourth quarter and the Bison went nearly 11 minutes without a goal.
Barnett and Eleanor Marrs led the Bison with two goals apiece. Bucknell had played earlier in the day, defeating Connecticut College by a 14-4 margin. Michigan was playing for the first time at this year's CWPA Championship.
The Bison took an early 2-0 lead in the contest as Hannah Sunday and Barnett found the back of the net in the opening minutes. The Wolverines didn't get on the board until more than four minutes had elapsed in the first quarter.
Bucknell will play next on Saturday at 2:20 p.m. against eighth-seeded Mercyhurst. The Bison can still finish as high as fifth in the 10-team field. Princeton's DeNunzio Pool is hosting the CWPA Championship.
