Women's Tennis Plays Boston U. in PL Quarterfinals on Friday

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's tennis team opens play in the Patriot League Tournament with a quarterfinals match on Friday at Colgate's J.W. Abrahamson Memorial Courts. The seventh-seeded Bison will take on second-seeded Boston University at 3 p.m.
Bucknell enters postseason play with an overall record of 6-14 and a 2-4 mark in the Patriot League, while Boston University finished at 11-7 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The Bison hold wins over sixth-seeded Colgate and eighth-seeded Lafayette. The Terriers beat Army West Point, Lehigh, Lafayette and Holy Cross.
Friday's match will feature a contest between two of the top players in the conference as Bucknell's Maria Cioffi and Boston's Johanna Hyoty will square off at No. 1 singles. Hyoty is the defending Patriot League Player of the Year, but Cioffi has staked her claim to the award this season with a perfect 6-0 record against league opponents. Hyoty went 3-1 in league play, including a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Army West Point's Carolyn Pitman. Cioffi posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Pitman.
Bucknell and Boston met in the semifinals of last year's Patriot League Tournament. The Bison advanced past the quarterfinals with a 4-0 win over Lehigh, before falling 4-0 to the Terriers. The Terriers went on to win the title.
Cioffi and Stephanie Pino recorded singles victories in the quarterfinal match against the Mountain Hawks last season. Cioffi was also a winner at No. 1 doubles, while Pino teamed with Michele Urbinati for a win at No. 3 doubles.
The winner between Bucknell and Boston advances to play the winner between third-seeded Army West Point and sixth-seeded Colgate in the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. The championship match will be played on Sunday at noon.
