LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's track and field team will attempt to defend its title when it travels to Williamsburg, Virginia for the Colonial Relays, hosted by William and Mary on Friday and Saturday. It won't be an easy task as the Bison will try to fend off 52 other teams gunning for the team championship.
“Our men have had a lot of success at the Colonial Relays as we have won it a couple of times as team, including last year,” said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. “It's a great meet for our team to come together and set themselves up for the rest of the outdoor season. Unfortunately, we will be sitting a few key guys out due to injuries or suspensions, but I am confident the rest of our men will step up big.”
Bucknell's title last year came in a field of 42 teams. The Bison cruised to the first-place finish with 101.20 points, with Rutgers behind them with 87.20 points. Patriot League teams Holy Cross and American were 28th and 36th, respectively.
Kevin Tapper led the way for the Bison by winning the triple jump with a leap of 47-7, which still stands as the sixth best jump in program history. He also scored points with an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter dash, and ran a leg on the distance medley relay team that took third.
Jack Fellows and Brian Monahan racked up points for Bucknell at last year's Colonial Relays, each scoring in three events. The pair both placed in the top 10 in the hammer throw, shot put and discus. Other current members of the team that contributed to the win include Michael McGowan (3,000), Andrew Garcia-Garrison (1,500), Elijah Kay (high jump), Laddie Trees (javelin), and Christian Lupica (110H).
The Bison are coming off a great performance in their season-opening event at Monmouth. Fellows, McGowan, Tapper and Trees all won individual events at the Monmouth Season Opener.
Following the Colonial Relays, Bucknell will have its first outdoor home meet of the season, the Bison Outdoor Classic on April 11-12.
