UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State scored eight runs on six hits in the first two innings and defeated Bucknell by an 11-2 score in baseball action Wednesday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Bison, who will play their next seven games at home, posted eight hits, including three by Mark Powell and two by Joe Ogren, who is hitting a team-best .369 on the season.
Wednesday's contest was the second in just over a week between Penn State (12-20) and Bucknell (18-17). The two teams met last Tuesday with the Nittany Lions winning 4-2.
The Bison used seven pitchers in the game with senior Jordan Holtz pitching the longest (2.0 IP). He allowed no runs, just one hit and struck out two. The Bucknell pitchers combined for five strikeouts in the contest. Freshman Connor Van Hoose and sophomore Tommy Gambon also held Penn State without an earned run during their one innings of work.
The Bison scored their runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Their first run came on a Rob Krentzman sac fly that scored Ogren, who led off the frame with a single. The sixth-inning run came when Jon Mayer and Powell posted back-to-back two-out doubles.
Penn State used four pitchers in the game with starter Tom Mullin (3-0) earning the win by limiting Bucknell to four hits and one run in five innings of work.
The Nittany Lions recorded 12 hits, including two apiece by Ryan Richter, Jim Haley and Aaron Novak. Tyler Kendall drove in a team-high two runs.
Bucknell, which won three of four games against Army last weekend, will return home to host Lafayette in a four-game Patriot League series this weekend at Depew Field. The Bison are in the midst of a stretch where they are playing 11 of 12 at home.
