BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis wrapped up the regular season with an easy 9-0 win at Division II Bloomsburg on Tuesday. The Bison enter postseason play riding high, as they upped their record to 13-8, a 10-win improvement from last season.
Earlier in the day, the Patriot League determined seeding for the conference tournament, which will be held at Bucknell from Thursday to Sunday. The Bison received the fifth seed and will play fourth-seeded Colgate in the quarterfinals on Friday at noon. The tournament opens with No. 8 Lafayette vs. No. 9 Holy Cross in a first round match on Thursday.
Tuesday's match proved to be a good warmup for Bucknell as it was able to move multiple players up in the lineup and still get the shutout win. Freshman Timber Erskine, who went 5-3 during the fall, stepped into the starting lineup for just second time this spring and posted his first career victory by defeating Denis Ikejiri 6-0, 6-1.
Erskine was one of five Bucknell freshmen to post victories. Daniel Wright (No. 2), Maxwell Kane (No. 3), Ben Gerber (No. 4) and Williams Szamosszegi (No. 5) all won in straight sets.
Junior Nick Bybel cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to finish the regular season on a 19-match winning streak. He is 20-1 during the spring and is a strong candidate to repeat as Patriot League Player of the Year.
Playing under Division II scoring rules, Bucknell picked up three points in doubles. Nick Bybel and Octavio Canibe teamed up for a win at No. 1, Kane and Wright were winners at No. 2, and Szamosszegi and Erskine were triumphant at No. 3.
