LEWISBURG, Pa. – Fifth-seeded Bucknell rolled to a 4-0 win over fourth-seeded Colgate in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Men's Tennis Tournament on Saturday at Bucknell's Varsity Tennis Courts.
Bucknell improved to 14-8 overall and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the eighth time in nine years. The Bison will take on top-seeded Army West Point, a 4-0 winner over eighth-seeded Lafayette in the quarterfinals, on Saturday at 11 a.m.
With the win, Bucknell avenged a 4-3 loss to Colgate just two weeks ago. That match came down to No. 2 singles, where freshman Daniel Wright fell in three sets to Alan Pleat. Wright turned the tables on Friday, winning in dominant fashion. His 6-2, 6-3 victory clinched the match for the Bison.
With victories in the first two completed doubles matches, the Bison were off to a good start with a 1-0 lead. Nick Bybel and Bryan Adams made quick work of their opponents at No. 1 with an 8-1 verdict. Octavio Canibe and Ben Gerber followed with an 8-6 victory.
The Bison won the doubles point in their first meeting with the Raiders this season, too. The difference this match came in singles, where they managed to pick up three victories and possibly could have had more had the other matches been completed.
Bybel ran his unbeaten streak to 20 matches in singles with an easy 6-0, 6-1 decision on court one. He is 21-1 during the spring, including a 6-0 record against Patriot League opponents. Adams followed with the second singles victory of the day for the Bison, posting a 6-4, 6-2 win over Nick Laub at No. 3. Adams was swept by Laub in their first meeting this season.
Bucknell played at Army 12 days ago and was beaten 5-2. Bybel and Adams both scored points for the Bison. William Szamosszegi pushed his opponent to three sets at No. 6 singles.
“We were all pretty excited to get the opportunity to play against a team that we had lost to during the season,” Bybel said of the rematch with Colgate. “Everyone came out with energy and ready to play, and we were able to come away with the sweep. It's going to be a tough match against top-seeded Army, but I 100 percent believe that we can win it.”
