LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell baseball junior catcher Jon Mayer (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) and junior pitcher Andrew Andreychik (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) both picked up weekly awards Monday following their performances during a four-game series against Army this past weekend. Mayer was named the Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week and 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week after hitting .565 with 12 RBIs against the Black Knights, while Andreychik allowed just two hits and picked up his third win of the season in a 14-1 victory over Army.
Neither Bison is a stranger to weekly awards. This is Mayer's second Patriot League Player of the Week award this season, while Andreychik is a five-time Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, including twice this year.
Bucknell posted a 3-2 record last week, but was 3-1 in league play, claiming the first three games of its four-game home series against Army. The Bison (18-16, 4-8 PL) moved back to within one game of fourth place in the Patriot League standings with two more weekends left in the regular season.
Mayer, who was named Bison Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career, put together a terrific weekend at the plate. He was 10-for-17 (.588) with one home run, 12 RBIs and three runs scored against the Black Knights. Mayer was hitless in his first four at bats, but ended the series on a 10-for-13 tear, with his first hit coming on a walk-off single that lifted Bucknell to a 2-1 victory in 11 innings in game one of the series.
Mayer was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in Saturday's game two and then exploded for seven RBIs in Sunday's game one victory that Andreychik pitched. He had four RBI singles and drove in seven runs overall in the contest and came within one of the Bucknell single-game record for RBIs. Mayer wrapped up the series with two more hits and two more RBIs in the finale.
In addition to his terrific work at the plate, Mayer caught 35 of 36 innings over the weekend, helping the Bison pitching staff to a 2.75 ERA.
Thanks to his hitting prowess this past weekend, Mayer saw his batting average jump nearly 60 points and he now ranks fifth on the team with a .265 batting average. The All-Patriot League player entered the weekend with 14 RBIs and he is now tied for the team lead with 26, while his 30 hits rank fourth on the squad.
Andreychik, who has an impressive 1.88 ERA during Patriot League play, continued to pitch well in game one on Sunday. After giving up a pair of first-inning doubles he settled down and retired the next 16 hitters in a row. He did not allow a hit after the first inning and the only other Army player to reach base came on a seventh-inning error.
The 2013 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, Andreychik recorded his second career two-hitter and the 26th in program history.
Andreychik has now allowed just five earned runs over his last five appearances (35.0 IP). His ERA is now a season-low 2.55 and he is tied for the team lead with three complete games.
Bucknell will play a Wednesday evening game at Penn State before opening a seven-game homestand with a four-game weekend series vs. Lafayette.
