Men's Tennis Finishes 3-2 in Patriot League with Win at Loyola (Md.)

BALTIMORE, Md. – Bucknell swept all three doubles matches and won four in singles on its way to a 5-2 win at Loyola (Md.) in Patriot League men's tennis action on Saturday. The Bison improved to 12-8 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while the Greyhounds fell to 9-8 overall and 2-5 in the league.
“It's great to win today and finish the year above .500 in the Patriot League,” said Bucknell head coach Craig Schwartz. “We have to stay focused and be prepared for a tough week of tennis, including the PL Championships.”
Bybel finished off a perfect 5-0 record against Patriot League opponents this season with an easy 6-2, 6-0 win over Greg Olesnycky at No. 1 singles. He continued to add to his team record for single-season wins with his 18th-consecutive victory, improving to 19-1 during the spring and 35-3 on the year.
Bybel and Bryan Adams were 8-3 winners at No. 1 doubles, upping their record to 16-3 in dual matches. Maxwell Kane and Daniel Wright won 8-5 at No. 2, while Octavio Canibe and Ben Gerber outlasted their opponents 8-6 at No. 3.
Bybel's win in singles put Bucknell up 2-0. Kane followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 to up the lead to 3-0. After a Loyola win at No. 3, Wright clinched the team win for the second straight match with a three-set verdict over Jordan Kuchta.
William Szamosszegi posted the final win of the day for Bucknell, topping Brett Shriver 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. He is 13-6 on the year, including a 7-5 mark during the spring.
“It's great that we pulled out the win in today's match, but everyone still has their minds set on winning the Patriot League Tournament,” Szamosszegi said.
Bucknell has two non-conference matches on the schedule before postseason play begins. The Bison will play at Coppin State on Sunday and at Bloomsburg on Tuesday, before hosting the Patriot League Championships on April 16-19.
