ORLANDO – The Bucknell women's tennis team is getting closer to finally fielding a healthy lineup this season, and the results spoke for themselves Monday with a 5-2 win over Hampton. The Bison improved to 1-6, winning the first of five matches scheduled for the Orlando trip.
“The match started out rough, with our players committing way too many unforced errors,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “It didn't look good in the beginning when we lost the first set on four of the six courts, but although we didn't necessarily play our best tennis, I was proud of the fight from the girls.”
Freshman Lisa Jouravleva improved to 5-2 during the spring, clinching the match with a thrilling come-from-behind win at No. 2 singles. She dropped the first set 6-2, but bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second set and an 11-9 victory in the third.
“Lisa dropped her first set quickly but then started to play more consistent,” Helt said. “Once she found her momentum she cruised through her second set. She battled hard in the 10-point third set super breaker and pulled it out for the team's fourth point.”
Shortly after Jouravleva pulled out her win, junior Stephanie Pino won in similar fashion at No. 3. She went the distance in a 4-6, 6-3 (10-7) verdict over Mikaela Pierce at No. 3.
Freshman Madeline Melch and sophomore Melissa Parks each won in straight sets. Melch was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Melanie Scott at No. 4, while Parks topped Daneva Charles 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Bison clinched the doubles point thanks in large part to a crucial 9-8 decision by senior Alyssa McAndrew and freshman Emilie Bush at No. 3. Junior Maria Cioffi and sophomore Michele Urbinati cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 2
“Every day we're on the court now we will just get better,” Helt said. “The players will start gaining some good confidence as they make the adjustment to playing outdoors.”
The Bison return to action with a pair of matches on Tuesday. They are scheduled to play Evansville at 11:30 a.m. and will take on Northern Illinois at 6 p.m.
