WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Terese Buechli and Jessica Wojciechowski scored five goals apiece to lead American to a 16-6 victory over Bucknell in a Patriot League women's lacrosse contest Saturday at Jacobs Field. Freshman Sarah Galzerano, making her first career start, scored her first two collegiate goals for the Bison.
Galzerano gave Bucknell a 1-0 lead 4:09 into the match, but Wojciechowski tied it 19 seconds later, igniting a decisive 10-0 run for the Eagles. It was a 7-1 game at the half and 10-1 after Wojciechowski scored off a Jordan Harrington assist at the 25:01 mark of the second half.
Emily Becker, Galzerano and Sam Rickels scored in a 3-1 Bucknell surge that made it 11-4 with 16:35 still to play, but the Eagles ripped off five straight goals from there to put the game away.
Bucknell fell to 2-10 on the season and 0-5 in the Patriot League, while American improved to 3-8, 1-3. The stat sheet was fairly even, with American leading 27-24 in shots and 17-15 in ground balls, while draws were deadlocked at 12 apiece. But 16 of the Eagles' 27 shots found the back of the net compared to Bucknell's 6-for-24 shooting.
Five of American's goals came on free-position attempts, while the Bison could not convert any from the 8-meter stripe.
Gretchen Richter led all players in the game with seven draw controls, and defender Katherine Doyle had tallied four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
The Bison are back at it next Saturday at Holy Cross at 1 p.m.
