Women's Tennis Beats Villanova for Third Straight Win

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's tennis team continued its big turnaround, beating visiting Villanova 6-1 on Tuesday at the Bucknell Tennis Courts. The Bison have won three straight matches to improve to 4-9 on the year.
The Bison opened the match with wins in two of the three doubles matches to notch the first point. Maria Cioffi and Stephanie Pino were 8-4 winners at No. 1, while Lisa Jouravleva and Michele Urbinati were 8-5 victors at No. 2.
Bucknell went on to win five of the six singles matches. Jouravleva upped her winning streak to four matches, but it wasn't easy. She dropped a tough first set 7-6 to Alexandra Krogius at No. 2, but responded with a 6-2 win in the second set and a thrilling 13-11 triumph in the third.
Cioffi, Melch and Parks all ran their winning streak to three consecutive matches. Cioffi outlasted Samantha Schafer 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in a competitive three-set contest at No. 1, while Melch won by the same scores at No. 3. Parks had a little easier time at No. 6, topping Connor Brewer 6-4, 6-3.
Michele Urbinati got things rolling for the Bison, picking up the point in the first completed singles match. She was a 6-1, 7-6 winn over Kate Pettee at No. 4.
“Today's match was a hard-fought and well deserved win,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “After more than two months of battling injuries, illness, cold temps and canceled matches, it's nice to see them finally starting to hit their stride on court. I think the good news is that we have better tennis in us, but it was just really good to see them battle and pull out all three of the three-set matches.”
The Bison are back on their home courts on Saturday when they host George Mason. The non-conference match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
