Women's Tennis Shuts Out Lafayette in First Conference Match of the Year

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's tennis team continued its big turnaround with another dominant win on Thursday at the Bucknell Tennis Courts. The Bison rolled to a 5-0 shutout win over visiting Lafayette in their first Patriot League match of the season.
The Bison improved to 5-9 on the season with their fourth straight win. They have out-scored their opponents 23-3 during that stretch.
The Bison jumped out to a 1-0 lead after picking up wins in the first two completed doubles matches. Michelle Urbinati and Lisa Jouravleva teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 2, while Alyssa McAndrew and Melissa Parks clinched the point with an 8-3 victory at No. 3.
Bucknell went on to win all four singles matches that were completed before play was called due to rain. Jouravleva started the run with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2, improving to 10-4 on the season with her fifth straight win. Michele Urbinati put the Bison up 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 4.
Madeline Melch put the finishing touches on the match, clinching the team win with an easy 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 5. Maria Cioffi upped her winning streak to four matches and evened her record at 6-6 with a 6-1, 6-2 verdict at No. 1.
Stephanie Pino was just two games away from notching a win at No. 3. She led 6-4, 4-2 before play was halted because of the rain.
“Our second and third doubles looked solid today,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “In singles, everyone looked really strong and we got out to an early lead in every match. It started to rain and it looked like we weren't going to get the match complete, but leading 5-0 in the second set, Madeline served out her game to clinch the match.”
Bucknell continues conference play with a match at Colgate on Saturday at 10 a.m.
