LEWISBURG, Pa. – Anthony Gingerelli and Mike Korchak drove in two runs apiece and six Bison pitchers combined to allow just six hits in a 6-2 Bucknell baseball victory over Binghamton Tuesday afternoon at Depew Field. It was the fourth straight win for the Bison, who improved to 13-7 on the year. The Bearcats fell to 4-9.
Bucknell, which is in the midst of a seven-game homestand, scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning, three of which came home on Gingerelli double over the head of the right fielder. Korchak, who was 3-for-5 at the plate, drove in a run in the sixth with an RBI single to left, while he added another RBI in the eighth with a double to right as he posted his fourth multi-hit game of the season.
Binghamton used eight pitchers in the game and none of them for more than 1.2 innings. The Bison loaded the bases in the first inning against starter Jake Wloczewski, but were unable to push across a run.
Reliever Matt Gordon (0-1) came on in the second inning and Jake Archey – who transferred to Bucknell from Binghamton – got the scoring started with a long double to right-center that plated Mark Powell. Greg Wasikowski walked and Brett Smith singled to load the bases for Gingerelli. The senior lofted a double to right field that drove home two runs. The throw back to the infield escaped and Smith read it well and scampered home with the fourth run of the frame. He now has a team-high 22 runs scored, including two on Tuesday.
The Bison loaded the bases again in the third, but were unable to add to their lead. Eight hitters in a row were sent down before Smith had a one-out triple to left-center in the sixth and later scored on Korchak's single.
Dan Keller made the first start of his career on the mound for Bucknell and was outstanding through the first three innings. He retired the first four hitters he faced and allowed just two baserunners over the first three frames.
Binghamton got on the board in the fourth inning when three of the first four hitters reached against Keller and an RBI single by Eddie Posavec forced Bison head coach Scott Heather to turn to the bullpen. Max Kra (1-0) came in and ended up earning his first win of the season. He retired the first four hitters he faced before allowing a single to David Schanz that he tried to extend to a double, but was gunned down by Gingerelli to end the inning.
The Bearcats posted just two hits the rest of the way against relievers Jack Schoenberger, Tucker Rekucki, Tommy Gambon and Mike Stephens. Gambon was in line for the first save of his career after sending Binghamton down 1-2-3 in the eighth, but he walked the first two hitters in the ninth and gave way to Stephens. Stephens earned his second save of the year as he got Schanz to ground into a double play and then struck out No. 3 hitter Jake Thomas to end the game.
Korchak and Smith, who was 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to six games, combined for five of Bucknell's nine hits in the game.
The Bison will conclude their homestand Wednesday with a 3 p.m. non-league game vs. Mount St. Mary's.
