LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Following a very successful winter sports campaign, highlighted by a conference title in women's indoor track and field and a regular-season crown in men's basketball, Bucknell has expanded its lead in the Corvias Patriot League Presidents' Cup standings.
At the end of the fall season the Bison held a 7.0-point lead on Boston University and an 8.25-point lead on Navy. Now with 13 sports in the books, Bucknell's lead is stretched to 10.25 points over Navy and 16.5 over Boston University.
The Bison have compiled 97 points in the Presidents' Cup standings, followed by Navy (86.75), Boston University (80.5), Lehigh (73), Army (69.5), American (58.5), Colgate (53.75), Holy Cross (46.5), Lafayette (41.5) and Loyola (26.5).
Bucknell's lead in the men's and women's standings has also grown. In the men's race, Bucknell has 46.75 points, with Navy (41.5) and Boston University (37) in contention. Bison women's teams have compiled 50.25 points, outdistancing Navy (45.25), Boston University (43.5) and Lehigh (41.5).
The Presidents' Cup is awarded to the member institution with the highest cumulative sports point total for their Patriot League standings in sponsored men and women's sports. Points are awarded based upon a combination of an institution's regular-season and tournament finishes in each sport. If there is no Patriot League Championship tournament (football), points are awarded based upon final regular-season standings. If there is no regular-season competition and the champion is determined by a Patriot League Championship (cross country, golf, rowing, swimming and diving, track and field), points are awarded based upon final tournament standings. If all teams compete in the Patriot League Championship and there is a regular-season competition (basketball, tennis), points are awarded based on an average of final regular season standings and Championship finish. If all teams do not participate in the Patriot League Championship and there is a regular-season competition (baseball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball), points are awarded based upon an average of final season standings and Championship finish. For those teams not participating in the Championship, the final regular season standing will be used.
During the winter season, championships were conducted in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's indoor track and field. In addition to the regular-season title in men's basketball and the championship in women's track and field, Bucknell also claimed runner-up finishes in men's track and field and women's swimming and diving, and fourth-place finishes in women's basketball and men's swimming and diving.
The Bison are trying to win the Presidents' Cup for the 19th time in the 25-year history of the Patriot League. Navy claimed the Cup for the second time last season, and Army has won it four times.
There are still plenty of points up for grabs in the busy spring sports season, as championships will be awarded in baseball, softball, women's rowing, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's outdoor track and field.
