WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Bowling Green scored runs in each of the first five innings and totaled 10 hits in a 9-3 victory over the Bucknell baseball team Tuesday at Chain of Lakes Stadium. It was the third game of a weeklong trip to Florida for the Bison, who are now 6-4 on the season.
Bucknell scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings and registered nine hits against three Falcon pitchers. Anthony Gingerelli and Jon Mayer were both 2-for-5, while Mayer and Greg Wasikowski drove in runs.
Bowling Green (4-6) opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning off Bison starter Andrew Andreychik (0-2), who had logged only 3.2 innings this season entering the contest. The Falcons plated single runs in the second, third and fourth innings before scoring three more times in the fifth. No. 6 hitter Randy Righter paced the Bowling Green offense with three hits, while Trey Keegan, Matt Smith and Kory Brown each had two RBIs.
Bucknell cut into the early Falcons lead in the bottom of the first when the first two hitters reached via a walk (Brett Smith) and a single to right (Gingerelli). Mayer's one-out single through the left side drove Smith home.
Smith led off the third inning with a single and later scored on an error.
The Bison had a good rally going in the fourth inning when Spencer Stokes led off with a single to center and Mike Korchak followed with a double to left-center. Mark Powell then walked to load the bases with none out. A fielder's choice by Wasikowski allowed Stokes to score the team's final run as a Smith sac bunt and a Gingerelli strike out ended the inning.
Bucknell, which had the leadoff hitter reach six times, threatened again in the ninth inning as it left the bases loaded to end the game.
Andreychik was the first of five Bison pitchers in the contest. He pitched 3.2 innings and was charged with six hits and six runs (four earned). He was followed by Tommy Gambon (0.1 IP), Dan Keller (3.0 IP), Tucker Rekucki (1.0 IP) and Mike Stephens (1.0 IP). Keller allowed a two-out, two-run home run to Brown in his first inning of work, but settled down to retire five in a row at one point, while Rekucki and Stephens allowed just one baserunner apiece during their innings of work.
Sophomore Tyler Anderson (1-0) earned the win for Bowling Green by pitching four innings of one-hit relief. All three Bison runs were charged to starter Brett Fitzwater, who departed one out into the fourth inning.
Bucknell will continue its Florida trip Wednesday with a 12:30 p.m. contest vs. Maine.
