BOSTON – The Bucknell men's track and field team had a successful weekend in Boston with just three athletes competing. Senior Andrew Garcia-Garrison broke his own school record in the mile run, and senior Alex Jagelsky ran his second-best 800m at the Boston University Last Chance Meet, while senior Christian Lupica was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles at the USATF Indoor Championships, also held in Boston.
Garcia-Garrison moved a step closer to his goal of a sub-four-minute mile, winning the event with a time of 4:00.51. He had already set the school record in the event earlier this season, running a 4:02.35 at the Penn State National Invitational.
One of just three runners in the event representing a college team, Lupica finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.90. He crossed the line in 8.03 to qualify seventh out of the preliminaries. Lupica is Bucknell's record holder in the event, running it in 7.82 last season.
Jagelsky was chasing a 38-year old school record in the 800m. He wasn't able to best Thomas McLean's time of 1:50.30, but he wasn't far off. Jagelsky finished in 1:50.90, the second-fastest time of his career, and took fourth.
“I thought it was a very good day for the Bison,” said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. “Andrew ran a great race. He may have still been a tad fatigued from four races at leagues, but he was able to muscle his way to a win and a nice PR. “Alex ran very aggressively and was near the lead with 150 to go, but the very fast first 400 caught up to him a bit towards the last 60 meters. Christian making it to finals against our nation's best and running on national television is a great kickstart to the outdoor season. After an early season injury, he is starting to round into shape and ran his season-best time. This was definitely a worthwhile trip.”
The Bison will return to Boston on March 7-8 for the IC4A Championships.
