NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. – Playing without two of its top players, the Bucknell women's tennis team fell on the road to Niagara, 6-1. The Bison were without No. 1 singles player Maria Cioffi and freshman Madeline Melch for singles play.
Freshman Lisa Jouravleva, who entered the day at 3-1 in singles play at No. 2, stepped into the top spot and recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win over Iva Celan. Jouravleva was also a winner in doubles action, teaming with freshman Emilie Bush for an 8-5 win at No. 2.
“The team played tough and many of the matches were a lot closer than the scores showed,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “Michele Urbinati played in her first match since being injured in October. She's usually No.1 doubles and No. 3 or 4 singles player. Without Cioffi and Melch it has pushed our depth to step up and play a lot higher in the lineup, and I'm really proud of the way they've all handled it. It's a deep and talented team and we're looking forward to finally getting everyone healthy.”
Urbinati and sophomore Melissa Parks played in a thrilling match at No. 3 doubles. The pair came up just short in an 8-7 defeat.
The Bison (0-5) will remain in New York for a match at St. Bonaventure on Sunday. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
