LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Freshman Will Sands scored a career-high four goals for Bucknell, but Ryan Walsh countered with two goals and three assists to lead 20th-ranked Colgate to a 10-8 victory over the Bison at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Bucknell slipped to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League, while Colgate remained unblemished at 4-0, 2-0 PL.
The game was less than seven minutes old when Colgate stormed to a 4-0 lead behind goals from Walsh, Matt Clarkson, Anthony Abbadessa and Kevin Adams. But the Bison scored the next five goals to go ahead for the first time.
Sands scored the first two goals in that run, and then Kyle Shanahan made it a 4-3 game at the end of the first quarter. All-America midfielder David Dickson, playing for the first time this season after injuring his wrist in a preseason scrimmage against Syracuse, tied it 2:02 into the second quarter with his first goal of the season. Dickson then fed Sands midway through the period to make it 5-4 Bison.
Cameron Williams and Jack Stebbins scored for Colgate in the final 4:07 to give the Raiders the lead back at the break. Sands tied the game at 6-all at 11:39 of the third period, but Colgate regained the lead for good with back-to-back goals 58 seconds apart from Walsh and Abbadessa.
Bucknell twice pulled within one goal, but both times the Raiders answered. Dickson made it a 9-8 game with 10:50 left in the fourth quarter, but 1:17 later Williams scored for the final margin of 10-8.
Sam Grinberg made 10 saves for Bucknell, which outshot Colgate 38-33. Brandon Burke made one save for Colgate before leaving with an injury late in the first quarter, and then Jake Danehy stopped seven shots the rest of the way.
Alex Spring had another strong game defensively for the Bison, collecting four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Bucknell plays its third straight Patriot League game next Saturday at Lehigh at 1 p.m.
