EMMITSBURG, Md. – Paced by 19 points and nine assists from Junior Robinson, Mount St. Mary's stormed back from a 17-point deficit to stun Bucknell 81-73 on Tuesday night at Knott Arena. Kimbal Mackenzie led the Bison with 13 points off the bench, while Nana Foulland added 12 points and Dom Hoffman 10.
The Bison (3-6) led 44-27 late in the first half and 44-30 at halftime, but the Mountaineers (3-6) wrapped a 14-0 run around the intermission break to get back in it. Mount St. Mary's took its first lead of the night at 65-63 on a Will Miller 3-pointer with 6:21 to go, and then it broke a 69-all tie with a 12-4 run to end the game.
Mount St. Mary's won its third straight game, while the Bison dropped their fifth in a row. Bucknell now heads into a two-week break for final exams.
“Obviously that's not the way we wanted to end the semester, but as disappointed as we are in how tonight's game went, the guys still have a lot to look forward to,” said head coach Nathan Davis. “We did some really good things in the first half tonight, but we just weren't able to get a stop defensively when we needed it. In all six of our losses we have had a chance to win the game. We need to take the positives and the negatives out of them and get back to work after finals.”
The Bison got out to a strong start, jumping ahead 14-5 after a Hass layup and then 21-8 on a D.J. MacLeay 3-pointer. Mount St. Mary's closed within six at 28-22, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Mackenzie jumped the lead back into double figures.
Bucknell led by as many as 17 in the first half at 44-27 after a pair of free throws by Ryan Frazier. The Mount closed the first-half scoring with a Charles Glover trey, making it 44-30 at intermission.
Bucknell went scoreless for the first 4:45 of the second half while the Mount scored the first 11 points of the stanza to pull within 44-41. Mackenzie hit his third 3-pointer of the night to get the Bison going again, but back-to-back treys by BK Ashe and Miller put the Mount ahead 65-63.
Buckets by Foulland and Chris Hass give the Bison the lead back, but at the 4:16 mark Mount St. Mary's went ahead for good on an alley-oop jam by Chris Wray. Robinson scored eight of the Mount's final 10 points to help close it out.
Mount St. Mary's shot 63.0 percent from the field in the second half and 49.1 percent for the game. The Mount hit nine 3-pointers in 21 attempts and outscored Bucknell 18-10 at the foul line. In addition to Robinson's game-high 19 points, Ashe had 14 and Glover 10.
Hass, Frazier and Stephen Brown scored nine points each for the Bison. Zach Thomas, who grew up about 20 miles away in Ijamsville, Maryland, was in foul trouble for much of the night and finished with six points, four rebounds and four assists. The Bison shot 45.2 percent for the game and hit 7 of 17 from 3-point range.
