LEWISBURG, Pa. – For the first time since 1990 the Bucknell football program has had multiple players earn All-America honors in the same season. On Tuesday, the STATS FCS All-America Teams were released and Bison junior OL Julie'n Davenport (Paulsboro, N.J./Paulsboro) earned second-team honors, while senior S Clayton Ewell (Springfield, Pa./Springfield Township) was a member of the third team. It is the first career All-America citation for both players.
This marks the fourth time in the last five years at least one Bucknell player has been named an All-American by STATS (formerly The Sports Network). Bryce Robertson (2011), Tracey Smith (2013) and Evan Byers (2014) were the other recent honorees.
The last time multiple Bison were cited with All-America honors was 25 years ago when OL Jay Butler was named a Second Team All-American by the Associated Press and S Mike Augsberger was an American Football Coaches Association All-American.
Davenport is Bucknell's first offensive lineman to be named an All-American since Butler in 1990. He is a three-time All-Patriot League selection, including twice being named First Team. A three-year starter who has been part of the starting unit at left tackle in all 33 games since he arrived on campus, Davenport was a Preseason All-Patriot League selection each of the last two years and was a team co-captain this fall.
Davenport recently earned the John Campana Award at the 54th annual Bucknell Football Bison Gridiron Club Awards Banquet. The Campana Award goes to the team's outstanding offensive lineman.
Ewell joined Davenport as a First Team All-Patriot League selection this year. He was also the fifth Bison player to be named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year as he spearheaded a defense that led the Patriot League in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense and passing defense.
A Second Team All-Patriot League selection last year and a Preseason All-Patriot League choice this year, Ewell totaled 66 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, three sacks, six pass breakups and one forced fumble this season. He was one of just two Bison seniors to play in all 44 games over the last four years, starting the last 33 in a row at safety. Ewell finished his Bucknell career with 184 tackles, the most of any current Bison player.
The Bison Gridiron Club Award, which is given to the team MVP, was presented to Ewell at Bucknell's recent postseason awards banquet.
Bucknell finished the 2015 campaign with a 4-7 overall record.
