LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell first-year head men's basketball coach Nathan Davis has announced the signing of three promising student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the NCAA's early signing period. Forward Bruce Moore and guards Ben Robertson and Avi Toomer comprise Davis' first class and will join the Bison in the fall of 2016.
“Our staff is extremely excited to add Bruce, Ben and Avi to the Bucknell men's basketball program,” said Davis. “First and foremost, all three are quality young men and outstanding students. They will fit right in with the high standards that Bucknell sets for its student-athletes, and I think the rest of the guys will enjoy welcoming them in as their teammates. From a basketball standpoint, this group adds another dimension of speed, skill and athleticism that will be needed next year after we graduate a very talented senior class.”
Moore is a 6'8” forward from McDonogh School in the Baltimore area, which is also the alma mater of Bison basketball Hall-of-Famer Al Leslie. He was a First Team All-MIAA selection last season alongside current Bison freshman Kimbal Mackenzie, who played for rival John Carroll. A team captain, Moore averaged a double-double last season with 13 points and 12 rebounds per game, and he shot 64 percent from the field and 84 percent from the foul line.
Moore has also played with Baltimore Elite and Maryland 3D.
“Bruce is a very talented player,” said Davis. “He can attack the rim off the dribble and step out and shoot threes, and he can also really defend. He is the whole package, and we are very excited for his arrival at Bucknell.”
Robertson is a 6'5” wing from High Point Christian Academy in North Carolina, which is a nationally ranked program entering the 2015-16 season. He has been a member of the varsity squad all four years and is a three-time team captain. Robertson has earned all-conference honors while helping his team to the state playoffs every year so far.
Robertson was born and raised in Grand Island, Nebraska before his family moved to North Carolina just prior to his first year of high school. In addition to his strong high school team, he has also played with the CP3 All-Stars, Team Winston and PSB Select. His older sister, Stacia, was the 2015 Big South Player of the Year while playing for High Point University, and she is currently playing professionally in Australia.
“Ben is a long and athletic wing,” said Davis. “He can finish above the rim, he is a capable shooter, and he also has the ability to be a very good defensive player.”
Toomer is a 6'3” shooting guard from Grady High School in Atlanta. He averaged 19.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game as a junior while helping his team to the state tournament for the third year in a row. Toomer was a First Team All-Region 6AAAA selection and was runner-up for Player of the Year. He made the Atlanta Journal Constitution All-State Second Team and was his team's MVP while maintaining the highest GPA on the squad. Toomer was also a Second Team All-Region selection as a sophomore in 2013-14.
Toomer has played AAU basketball for the Georgia Heat, where he was team MVP each year from 2011-14, and the Atlanta Express.
“Avi is fast and athletic,” praised Davis. “He has good size for a guard, and one of his best attributes offensively is his ability to shoot off the dribble. Avi also has the potential to be a very good defender at the college level.”
Bucknell is off to a 3-2 start in 2015-16 and will next play at Penn State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
