CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Playing just a few hours after defeating George Washington 17-4, the No. 15 Bucknell men's water polo team suffered an 11-7 loss to No. 11 Princeton Friday evening in the quarterfinals of the CWPA Championship at MIT. The seventh-seeded Bison can still finish as high as fifth in the 12-team field, while the Tigers won their 10th game in a row and will play in Saturday's semifinals.
Bucknell's (17-12) next game will be at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday against either Harvard or Navy. With wins each of the next two days, the Bison will finish in fifth place. Bucknell has 12 consecutive top-five finishes at the CWPA Championship.
The Bison were tied with the Tigers at 5-5 midway through the second quarter following a goal by Stefan Aleksic, but Princeton (20-4) scored four unanswered goals and did not allow another goal for nearly seven minutes as it outscored Bucknell 6-2 over the final 20 minutes of play.
Jeff Hagen led the Bison with three goals, while Sean Daley dished out three assists. Daley had four assists in the earlier win over the Colonials and now has a team-high 55 on the year, nearly twice as many as any teammate.
Bucknell fell to 0-3 against Princeton this year with the three losses by a total of eight goals.
