Bison Varsity Eight Wins Bucknell Fall Classic

SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. (Susquehanna River) – The Bucknell women's rowing program welcomed Drexel and fellow Patriot League member Lehigh to the Susquehanna River Sunday for the Bucknell Fall Classic. The Bison varsity eight posted a two-second victory over Drexel in Bucknell's only home event of the fall.
The Bucknell Fall Classic featured all boats starting at the same time. The novice crews were at the front during the start with more experienced crews behind them, ending with the varsity eights at the back. This unique starting structure allowed for all boats to approach the finish line around the same time.
The Bison won the varsity eight race, while Drexel claimed the second and third varsity eights. Lehigh was third in all three races.
The varsity eights had an interesting start as Drexel and Lehigh crashed into each other and came to a dead stop, putting both approximately five boat lengths behind early.
Bucknell also had two varsity fours and a pair of novice eight boats race.
“It was great to see our novice women in action for the first race experience of their rowing careers,” said Bison 20th-year head coach Stephen Kish.
“I was proud to watch the novice rowers race,” noted first-year head novice coach Devon Carroll. “It is so exciting to watch them put everything they have learned over the past few weeks together and row hard. Each day is better than the last, and I can't wait to watch their progress from now until our next regatta. This group is going to have fun rowing fast!”
