UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A relay made up of John Westwood, Kevin Tapper, Alex Jagelsky and Andrew Garcia-Garrison broke one of the oldest records in program history Friday night at the Penn State National Invitational. The group took fourth in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:46.39, topping the previous record set in 1979 by nearly seven seconds.
"What a huge honor to break one of our longest standing records," said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. "The three teams ahead of us ran some of the top times in the nation and we did not let that affect us."
Individually, the Bison were paced by a pair of seniors on the first day of competition. Jack Fellows led a trio of Bison in the top half of a large group in the weight throw, while Christian Lupica made his way through the prelims and semifinals before taking seventh in the 60-meter hurdles.
Fellows took sixth out of 27 with a toss of 58-00 ½ in the weight throw. Junior Olu Shoyoye was two spots behind him and became the Bison's newest IC4A qualifier in the process, finishing with a season-best throw of 56-10 ¼. Senior Brian Monahan qualified for IC4As earlier in the season, giving the Bison three athletes in that event. He took 11th on Friday.
Competing in a field of 28 runners in the 60-meter hurdles, Lupica advanced out of the prelims with a time of 8.07, matched his season-best time of 7.97 in the semifinals, and crossed the line in 8.03 in the finals. Junior Grant Reynolds made his way out of the prelims with a time of 8.26 and finished 12th with a season-best mark of 8.16 in the semifinals.
"Our weight throwers looked real good," commented Donner. "A few of our athletes got a little star struck, but this experience will make them better."
17TH ANNUAL BISON OPEN
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior Ben Burgess is the leader after four events in the heptathlon at the 17th Annual Bison Open. He was the top finisher in the 60-meter dash, the long jump and the shot put, and took second in the high jump.
Burgess has 2,734 points with three events to go, with Misericordia's Robert Poepperling close behind with 2,645. Also in the hunt in the heptathlon for Bucknell is sophomore Christopher D'Aliso with 2,424 points.
Freshman Maxwell Prizant and senior Matt Deysher were top-five finishers in their respective events on the first day of competition. Prizant took fourth out of 12 in the pole vault after clearing 13-09 ¼ on his first attempt, while Deysher was fifth out of 21 with a time of 8.64 in the 60-meter hurdles. He qualified for the finals with a time of 8.69 in the prelims.
