Bucknell Shines in First Day of Home Tournament

LEWISBURG, Pa.- The women's tennis team had much success at home on opening day of the Bucknell Invitational Friday. The Bison recorded nine wins combined in singles and doubles play.
In Flight A singles, standout Maria Cioffi defeated Paulina Bajet of Villanova, and freshman Lisa Jouravleva recorded her third career win for Bucknell against Mount St. Mary's Erin Benefiel. In Flight B, Madeline Melch won over Danielle Nguyen of Mount St. Mary's, 6-2, 6-0, and newcomer Allison Lane added another rookie season win in Flight C singles. Freshman Emilie Bush beat Villanova's Eliza Dordleman, 6-3, 7-6, in Flight D.
Cioffi and Michele Urbinati won, 8-6, in Flight A doubles, as did their teammates Jouravleva and Stephanie Pino. Bush and Alyssa McAndrew lost in doubles, and hold a combined record of 1-2 as a team.
In Flight B doubles, Lane and sophomore Melissa Parks won in the first round against Isabella Draper and Sam Barbato of Mount St. Mary's, then defeated Connor Brewer and Alexandra Krogius of Villanova in the next round. They are set to take on Aphrah Brokaw and Kate Pettee from Villanova in the final round.
Play will resume on Saturday, September 20. The tournament is set to conclude on Saturday after originally being slated for three days.
