LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell baseball sophomore catcher Jon Mayer (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) was named to the Charlottesville Regional All-Tournament Team, it was announced late Sunday night. The Bison cleanup hitter was 3-for-9 with one run scored and two RBIs as he helped Bucknell to a 1-2 record at the Regional.
Bucknell (31-21-1) was making its sixth NCAA appearance and its 5-2 win Saturday over Liberty was its second-ever victory in the NCAA Tournament. Mayer was 2-for-3 with a two-run double that staked the Bison to a three-run lead in the second inning. Starting pitcher Dan Weigel kept the Flames off the board the rest of the way.
Mayer, who was behind the plate for Saturday's win, added a second-inning single in Sunday's elimination-game loss to second-seeded Arkansas as he tied for the team lead in hits at the Regional.
Mayer split time between designated hitter and catcher this year and finished the campaign with a .246 batting average. He ranked second on the team in doubles (8) and was third in RBIs (25). The right-handed hitter connected on two home runs in a regular-season game against Holy Cross and his .381 slugging percentage was among the best marks on the squad.
A starter in 34 games this year, Mayer missed most of his rookie campaign in 2013 with an injury.
Bucknell earned an automatic berth to the NCAA postseason thanks to sweeping through the Patriot League Tournament. The Bison equaled the program record for victories in a season.
