LEWISBURG, Pa. – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) on Wednesday announced its annual All-Academic Top 30 Teams and Bucknell's wrestling squad ranks seventh nationally in grade-point average. Additionally, sophomore 125-pounder Paul Petrov (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) earned a spot on the NWCA All-Academic Team.
Bucknell's team GPA was a stellar 3.3, placing its third among EIWA programs and seventh overall. The Bison were the highest ranked of the nine newcomers to the list. Harvard repeated in the top spot with a 3.3657 GPA.
The team GPA is determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these come from the wrestlers entered in the NCAA Tournament conference qualifier.
A first-time NCAA qualifier this past March, Petrov is an accounting and financial management major with a GPA of nearly 3.7. He placed sixth at the EIWA Championships after advancing to the semifinals and followed that with a 1-2 record at NCAAs.
A team captain who never lost more than two bouts in a row, Petrov finished the campaign with a 31-9 record, including 17-3 in dual competition. His 31 victories placed him tied for 10th on the program's single-season wins list and his 51-23 career mark puts him second among current Bison in career victories.
Petrov recently shared the William A. Graham IV Most Outstanding Wrestler Award and won the Class of 2010 Leadership Award at Bucknell's annual end-of-season team banquet.
Bucknell finished the 2013-14 season with a 10-11 overall record and was 5-4 in EIWA duals, marking its first above-.500 conference finish since 2009-10. The Bison wrestled six ranked opponents, bringing its eight-year total to 44.
