Track & Field Set to Defend Team Titles at Patriot League Outdoor Championships
5/1/2014 3:29:00 PM | Men's Track and Field
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell track and field team will travel to Annapolis, Maryland on Friday for the start of competition in the 2014 Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Navy on the school's Ingram Field. The Bison have prepared for this meet for weeks, improving their performances with each successive weekend of competition, and are aiming to defend their sweep of the team titles, as both the men and women were declared the Patriot League champions last May.
Competition will begin on Friday at 9:45 a.m. with the men's decathlon, and will also feature the women's heptathlon, event finals in four field events, preliminary races in three track events and finals in the 10,000m and the 4x800m relay. Action will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday with the conclusion of the multi events, as well as finals in the four remaining field events and 11 track races. The team champions will be crowned in an awards ceremony at 5 p.m. on Saturday, and live results will be available for the duration of the competition.
The Bucknell women enter the weekend as the defending Patriot League champions, having won the meet last year, but were picked to finish fourth in the pre-season poll conducted back in March. The Bison have won more team titles than any other school in the conference, taking top honors on 13 occasions and winning 12 championships since 2000. Bucknell, which has never finished less than third in a league meet, returns 14 scorers, five individual champions and two winning relays from last year's squad, and is primed to make a push for a second consecutive title and its third in the last four years. Additionally, senior Jennifer Zymet, who won Bucknell's Christy Mathewson Award as the most outstanding female athlete in the senior class earlier this week, is looking to become just the second competitor in conference history to win four consecutive titles in the same event, as she is a three-time champion in the 400m race.
The Bucknell men, who have won four straight team titles in the outdoor meet, will be looking to claim a fifth consecutive crown with their performances this weekend. The Bison, who have finished in the top three in the conference on 21 occasions, were picked to finish second in the pre-season poll, but have produced a plethora of impressive performances over the past two months, setting them up for a strong run at the title. They return 19 scorers and two individual champions to this year's squad, as senior Ray Holmes, the indoor Field Athlete of the Meet, will be looking to defend his title in the triple jump and junior Kevin Keller will be aiming to win two straight in the long jump.
