LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's water polo senior goalie Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) was named the CWPA Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday. It marks the second time Heim has won the award this season.
A three-year starter in the cage, Heim posted three straight double-figure save performances this past weekend as the Bison posted a 2-1 record against league foes Harvard, George Washington and Brown. All three contests were decided by one goal and Heim finished the weekend with 36 saves and just 20 goals allowed.
Heim, who has nine double-figure save performances this season, opened the weekend with 11 saves in a win over Harvard. She followed with 10 stops later that day in a loss to George Washington and then concluded the weekend with a career-high 15 saves in a 7-6 win over Brown that clinched the No. 2 seed for Bucknell in the upcoming Southern Championships.
A starter in all 21 games this year, Heim has been a member of the starting lineup 48 consecutive times, including 79 of the last 80 contests. She now has 172 saves on the year and her .513 save percentage is a career-best figure.
Heim this past weekend crossed the 800-save plateau for her career and her 833 stops rank her third in program history, behind only Mandy Bynum (963) and Lindsay Chesterfield (892).
Heim and her Bison teammates will be in action at the Southern Championships at Harvard's Blodgett Pool this weekend. Bucknell is the No. 2 seed and will face Mercyhurst (11:30 a.m.) and Brown (8 p.m.) Saturday.
