LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell baseball's Andrew Andreychik (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) and Brett Smith (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) were each honored with weekly awards Tuesday following the Bison's four-game sweep of Navy. Andreychik repeated as both the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week and Bison Athlete of the Week, while Smith earned his first career Patriot League Player of the Week citation.
Andreychik and Smith were two of the many contributors Bucknell (12-11-1, 4-0 PL) had in its four-game series sweep of Navy. The Bison allowed just four runs in the four-game set, leading to their first Patriot League series sweep since 2006.
Andreychik continued his outstanding pitching of late as he recorded Bucknell's first two-hit shutout of at least seven innings by a single pitcher since 2010. The sophomore struck out four and pitched to just one batter over the minimum as he logged his third straight shutout, including second consecutive by a 1-0 score, Monday afternoon.
A right-hander, Andreychik now has a streak of 19.2 consecutive scoreless innings and has not walked a hitter in his last three starts. The last run scored against him came March 2. His three shutouts this season are a new program single-season record, while his four career shutouts place him in a tie for second on that ledger.
Andreychik is now 3-2 on the year with a 2.45 ERA. He has struck out 24 and walked just four in 33.0 innings of work over six starts. Opponents are hitting just .170 against him.
Smith was a team-best 8-for-12 (.667) from the top spot in the batting order during the sweep of Navy. He collected eight of Bucknell's 22 hits in the series and saw his season average jump 60 points. Smith was 5-for-5 with a walk and a sac bunt during Saturday's doubleheader and followed that up with three more hits during Monday's twinbill. Six of his eight singles were infield hits.
Smith scored the lone run in Andreychik's victory on Monday. He led off the bottom of the first with a single, stole second and eventually scored on a sac fly.
A starter in 23 of the team's 24 games, Smith has seen the bulk of his time in center field. He is hitting .321 with a team-high 17 runs scored this season.
The Bison will play a non-league game Wednesday at Mount St. Mary's at 3:30 p.m. before returning home this weekend, April 5-6, to host Lehigh in a four-game conference set.
