Holmes Wins Triple Jump, 4x400 Sets School Record on Second Day of IC4A Meet
3/8/2014 8:06:00 PM | Men's Track and Field
BOSTON, Mass. – Points have only been awarded in five events thus far in the 2014 IC4A Championships, but the Bucknell men's track and field team is off to an exceptional start at the Boston University Track and Field Pavilion. The Bison, who finished second to Navy at this year's Patriot League Championships, earned points in two of the field events contested, including 10 for senior Ray Holmes' triumphant leap in the triple jump, and have advanced three individuals and a relay to Sunday's finals session. Most of the men turned in performances that were significantly better than those that they put forth at the conference meet, and a school record and four program top ten marks were established in the process.
“Today was a great day,” said head coach Kevin Donner, “and we are set up nicely to break our all-time best for points scored at the IC4A Championships. Ray winning the triple jump was huge, and Jack finishing seventh in the weight throw was great. Christian is in the finals of the hurdles, and John ran a great 1000 to make the finals as well. Our 4x400 was also awesome, breaking the school record and making finals. I am excited to see what Jack and Joe do in the shot put tomorrow, and Ray will be looking to score more points in the long jump.”
Final results were determined in the heptathlon, the triple jump, the weight throw, the high jump and the 5000m on Saturday, and the Bison compiled 12 points to sit in fifth place after the second day of the meet. Cornell holds on to first place with 30 points, while Liberty (25), Albany (19) and Providence (16) all sit just in front of Bucknell.
Holmes' performance in the triple jump highlighted action in the field events, as the 2014 Patriot League Field Athlete of the Meet turned in a personal best leap of 49-09.25 to claim first place in the event. The mark was almost six inches further than the one he turned in at the Patriot League meet, and it makes him the second-best performer in the event in program history. Junior Jack Fellows was also impressive in the field events, scoring points for the Bison in the throwing circle, as he finished seventh in the weight throw with a heave of 61-05.00.
Bucknell advanced competitors to Sunday's finals in four events, beginning with junior Christian Lupica in the 60m hurdles. The school-record holder in the event won his heat in a time of 8.04, and will race in tomorrow's final as the second seed. Senior Patryk Najbar raced his way to the semifinals in the 60m, finishing in 11th with a time of 7.01, while sophomore John Westwood heads to Sunday's finals of the 1000m. Westwood's time of 2:25.44 in the prelims was a personal best and makes him the seventh all-time Bison in the event.
Competition for the day concluded with the 4x400 relay, and the Bison made the event one to remember. The squad of junior Kevin Tapper, senior Jacob Eaton Hall, sophomore Anthony Menza and Lupica combined for a time of 3:11. 89, breaking the school record of 3:12.38 that the same quartet set last season. The time, which was seven seconds faster than the mark they turned in at the Patriot League meet, sends them into the finals of the event as the second seed, just seven one-hundredths behind Navy.
The 2014 IC4A Championships will conclude on Sunday, with competition set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
