WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Led by a 4-over-par 74 from Thomas Walter, the Bucknell men's golf team posted a 308 on Sunday in the opening round of the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate, hosted by William & Mary at The River Course at Kingsmill Resort. Playing for the first time this spring, the Bison sit in a tie for 19th place in a strong 27-team field.
On a chilly March day when birdies were hard to come by, Walter made four of them in his round, including three on his first six holes. The Bison started on the back nine, and Walter made the turn at 1-under. He birdied both of the par-5s (7 and 15) on the par-70 course, and he sits in a tie for 36th place in a field of 140 competitors.
Also for Bucknell, Schuyler Stitzer made 12 pars and six bogeys in a round of 76. Peter Scialabba and D.J. Magee both shot 79, and Zach Pogust posted an 83.
Texas Tech and Eastern Michigan are tied for the team lead after posting rounds of 288. Dayton, William & Mary and UNC Greensboro are all five shots back. Bucknell and Wright State are tied for 19th, and they lead Delaware, George Mason, Temple, IPFW, Georgetown, Loyola (Ill.) and Saint Joseph's.
Four individuals broke par on Sunday, led by Carter Jenkins of UNCG with a 2-under 68. Jacob Groninger of IPFW, John Michael Cole of Appalachian State and Ryan Rettberg of Radford are all one stroke back at 1-under.
The 54-hole tournament will run through Tuesday. Monday's second round will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
