Women's Lax Downed by No. 16 Loyola 16-5

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Annie Thomas recorded five goals and three assists to propel 16th-ranked Loyola past Bucknell 16-5 in Patriot League women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at wet and chilly Graham Field. Katelyn Miller had two goals and an assist and Sam Rickels also scored twice for the Bison.
Marlee Paton tallied four goals and an assist, and Taryn VanThof added two goals for the Greyhounds, who improved to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League.
VanThof scored off a feed from Thomas on Loyola's first possession 57 seconds into the match. Loyola won the ensuing draw and was looking for a second early goal, but Andrea Feldman forced a turnover and Lucia Smircich nabbed the ground ball. Smircich passed to Miller near the Bison goal, and then Miller raced about 90 yards down the field for a coast-to-coast goal that evened the game at 1-1.
Thomas started a three-goal run that put Loyola up 4-1 before Rickels scored her second goal of the season for the Bison (0-8, 0-3). With 14:00 left in the half Bucknell appeared to force a turnover behind its own goal, but the Bison could not scoop up the ground ball. Paton then pouned on it and curled in front for the goal. Paton scored again just over two minutes later as part of a 7-1 run to finish the half. Ali Habicht's goal with 2:49 left gave the Greyhounds an 11-3 lead at the break.
Loyola then scored the first five goals of the second half to go up 16-3 before Rickels and an Miller finished the scoring in the final 10 minutes.
Loyola scored its 16 goals on only 24 shots, while the Bison launched 14 shots. Loyola also led 15-13 in ground balls and 13-10 in draw controls. Miller and Caroline Collins logged four draw controls each for Bucknell, and Sophie Kleinert led the team with three ground balls.
