Women's Water Polo Goes 1-1 on Final Day of Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Hannah Sunday and Eleanor Marrs netted four goals apiece to lead the Bucknell women's water polo team to an 11-8 victory over Cal Lutheran Sunday in its final game at the Aztec Invitational. The win capped an eight-game spring break trip to California for the Bison, who dropped a 10-3 decision to No. 19 San Diego State earlier in the day.
Bucknell (7-9) posted a 2-6 record on the weeklong trip that featured four ranked opponents.
Sunday's four goals in the win over Cal Lutheran (4-14) moved her into a first place tie for the team lead in goals this season (19) with Julianne Valdes, who posted one goal and three assists in the victory. Marrs totaled six goals on the day as she recorded two against the host Aztecs (13-8). She now has a team-high 37 points, nearly double her total from her freshman year (2013).
The Bison led Cal Lutheran 5-4 at halftime, but used a four-goal third quarter to open a 9-5 advantage. Bucknell won all four sprints and drew a season high-tying 10 ejections, including six by Sunday.
Rena Heim posted a total of 16 saves in the two games with 10 in the opener and six in the nightcap. Haley Derrod played the final quarter against the Lancers and had three saves against three goals allowed.
Bucknell will be idle next weekend and will return to action March 29 when it opens league play against Princeton (3 p.m.) and Mercyhurst (7 p.m.) in Erie, Pa.
