LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell wrestling team will return to action this Sunday after a full week with no matches. The Bison will take on a pair of EIWA opponents on the road as they will wrestle at Army at 2 p.m. before driving 75 miles to Fairfield, Conn., to take on Sacred Heart in a 7 p.m. dual.
The Bison (7-9, 3-2 EIWA) posted a 2-1 record last weekend with wins over American and George Mason before falling to No. 13 Virginia. Bucknell has won five of its last eight duals and with at least one victory Sunday will post its most wins in a season since going 12-6 in 2009-10.
Current Bison Athlete of the Week and EIWA Wrestler of the Week Victor Lopez highlighted last weekend as he went 3-0 with a one-point decision over top-10 ranked Gus Sako of Virginia. The 149-pound freshman now has a team-high three wins over ranked opponents and is 17-15 overall, including 9-7 in duals. He carries a season-best five-bout winning streak into the weekend.
Junior 285-pounder Joe Stolfi also put together a 3-0 record last weekend to move his season mark to a team-best 24-6. He is still ranked 20th nationally and is second nationally in pins (17). Stolfi continues to rank third on the program's single-season falls list and seventh on the career ledger. He is in the midst of a season-best nine-bout winning streak.
Army is 7-3 in duals this year, including 6-3 against EIWA competition. The Black Knights have won four consecutive matches and five of their last six and are coming off a fourth-place finish at the All-Academy Championships.
Sacred Heart is 2-7, 0-2 EIWA this year. The Pioneers' wins have come against Davidson and Millersville. Sacred Heart is led by second-year head coach Andy Lausier, a former Nelligan Sports Marketing staff member who was stationed within the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation.
This will be the second consecutive Sunday Bucknell will compete in a split doubleheader. Last Sunday the Bison wrestled at George Mason before jumping on the bus for close to two hours en route to Charlottesville, Va., for their dual with the nationally ranked Cavaliers.
Bucknell will conclude its five-match road trip next Friday, Feb. 14, with a 7:30 p.m. matchup with Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Pa. The very next day the Bison will close out their home schedule with a 2 p.m. match vs. VMI.
