LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior guard Cameron Ayers (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) was the catalyst for a pair of Bucknell victories over Navy and Army last week, and on Monday he picked up a pair of weekly awards. Ayers was selected as the Anaconda Patriot League Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in his career, and he also earned Bison Athlete of the Week honors.
Bucknell moved to 7-7 in the Patriot League and pulled within one game of fourth-place Army with a 73-61 win over the Black Knights on Saturday night. Ayers led all scorers in that game with 22 points, 13 of which came in Bucknell's decisive 23-9 run over the last seven minutes of the contest. His 3-pointer broke a tie and gave the Bison the lead for good with 7:01 to play. He hit another trey with 3:04 remaining that stretch the lead all the way up to nine, and then he iced the game by making 5 of 6 at the foul line in the final 1:32.
Ayers was just as impactful defensively in the win over the Black Knights. He primary assignment was to defend Kyle Wilson, the Patriot League's second-leading scorer at 18.9 points per game. Ayers helped hold Wilson without a field goal, and the Army star managed just a pair of free throws in the final 1:14 of the game.
Earlier in the week, Ayers scored 13 points as part of a balanced attack in a 78-57 win over Navy at Sojka Pavilion. He was 6-for-10 from 3-point range on the week and is now shooting 42.9 percent from the arc on the season, the fifth-best mark in the league. Ayers ranks third in the league in scoring at 15.6 points per game, and he leads the conference and ranks 45th nationally in free-throw shooting at 87.6 percent.
Ayers extended his streak to 19 straight double-figure scoring games, and he now has 1,455 career points, 10th-most in program history.
Bucknell has four games remaining in the regular season, including two key road games this week against the two Patriot League newcomers, Loyola and Boston University. The Bison will visit Loyola on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., followed by a trip to Boston for a Sunday noon contest that will air live on CBS Sports Network.
