COLUMBIA, S.C. – Four South Carolina pitchers combined on a one-hitter as the Bucknell baseball team dropped the final game of its three-game series against the No. 7 Gamecocks, 12-0, Sunday afternoon at Carolina Stadium.
South Carolina starting pitcher Wil Crowe (1-0) carried a no-hitter one out into the top of the seventh inning before departing in favor of Josh Reagan, who retired Justin Meier before Bison freshman Sam Clark hit a single up the middle for Bucknell's (0-3) first hit of the game. It was Clark's second hit of the series. Reagan and fellow relievers Cody Mincey and Joel Seddon retired the next seven Bison to finish the game.
Bucknell used just two pitchers in the contest as starter Andrew Andreychik (0-1) and lefty reliever Xavier Hammond each logged 4.0 innings. Andreychik allowed just one earned run (two unearned) over the first four innings, but the first four Gamecocks in the fifth reached on hits, including a three-run home run by Max Schrock. Andreychik and Hammond gave up 17 hits but just one walk, a significant improvement in control from Saturday's doubleheader against South Carolina (3-0).
The Gamecocks totaled three home runs in the contest and five total extra-base hits. Kyle Martin was 4-for-4 with two runs scored, while Joey Pankake was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a solo home run. Grayson Greiner also had a two-run home run in the sixth.
Jon Mayer (hit by pitch) and Brett Smith (walk) also reached base in the game for Bucknell.
The Bison will be in action again next weekend when they travel to Dover, Del., for four games. They will play Iona and host Delaware State on both Saturday and Sunday.
