LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Joe Stolfi was one of three Bison alive entering Saturday's second day of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and he became the squad's only placewinner as he finished sixth in the 285-pound bracket at the competitive two-day event.
A senior who was seeded fifth, Stolfi went 3-0 and advanced to the semifinals on Friday. He opened Saturday's competition against top-seeded Nick Gwiazdowski of North Carolina State and lost by an 11-1 score.
Stolfi then lost to Minnesota's ninth-seeded Michael Kroells by a 9-4 margin to fall into a fifth-place match against Ohio State's fourth-seeded Nick Tavanello. Tavanello, an opponent Stolfi defeated by decision on Friday, posted a pin in 43 seconds to finish in fifth place.
Paul Petrov (125) and Victor Lopez (149) also represented Bucknell on Saturday. Both needed just one win to guarantee a top-eight showing in their brackets, but both dropped their first matches of the day to conclude competition at the event.
Petrov's loss was by a 13-5 margin to eventual fourth-place finisher Trey Andrews from Northern Colorado, while Lopez lost a 5-2 decision to seventh-place finisher Abraham Rodriguez from Oregon State. Petrov was seeded ninth in his weight class, while Lopez was the No. 7 seed in his.
Bucknell finished in 25th place out of 37 teams with 27 points. Five consecutive EIWA teams finished consecutively in the team standings as Army, Hofstra, Bucknell, Navy and Columbia were 23rd through 27th.
The Bison will next be in action Dec. 20 when they host Virginia in their home opener. Start time is 2 p.m. in Davis Gym. There is free admission to the match.
