LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior Claire Maree O'Bryan scored a career-high 20 points and sophomore Claire DeBoer posted her second straight double-double as Bucknell cruised to a 79-50 win over visiting Morgan State in non-conference women's basketball action Wednesday at Sojka Pavilion.
Ten different players scored for the Bison, who improved to 4-2 for the second time in head coach Aaron Rousell's three seasons with the program. The Bears dropped to 2-5.
Bucknell took a 36-34 lead into halftime and pulled away with a 22-2 run to open the second half. O'Bryan made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points during the run, which stretched 8:37. DeBoer scored six points on her way to finishing the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
“It's a fun game when you make shots. I thought we had some really great stretches of play,” Roussell said. “The start to the second half was probably about the best 10 minutes of basketball we have played. We hit shots and I thought we moved the ball really well. “
DeBoer has reached double figures in rebounding in three consecutive games, averaging 14 boards per game during that stretch. Wednesday's double-double was the eighth of her career and the third of the season.
Bucknell overcame a slow start early in the game as it fell behind 10-2 after scoring the first bucket of the contest. The Bison made just one of their first seven shots but were able to regroup following the first media timeout. They finished the game with a 40 percent clip from the field, including a season-best 34 percent mark from the field. O'Bryan was 4-for-6 from behind the arc.
Most important for the Bison were their 20 assists on 23 field goals. They had averaged just 10.4 through the first five games of the season. Senior Audrey Dotson led the way with a season-high six assists, while Megan McGurk matched her season best of four helpers.
Dotson finished with 10 points and added eight rebounds. McGurk hit two treys on her way to eight points, freshman Carly Richardson tallied a career-high seven, and juniors Tyler Craig and Sheaira Jones each chipped in with six.
Tracey Carrington, who entered the game averaging 20.5 points, was the only Morgan State player to reach double figures. She scored 12 despite missing the entire second half with an injury.
The Bison finished with a 55-40 advantage in rebounds, eclipsing 50 boards for the second time this season. They upped their season rebounding margin to plus-7.8, good enough for second best in the Patriot League.
