LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell wrestling team is in the national rankings for the first time. The Bison posted a 3-0 record this past weekend, highlighted by a 20-16 victory over No. 10 Virginia, and are ranked 25th in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll, which was released Tuesday.
Bucknell (3-1, 1-0 EIWA) is ranked in the coaches poll for the first time in school history and is the only new addition to the rankings this week.
The Bison opened up their successful weekend Saturday with the four-point victory over the Cavaliers in Davis Gym. It marked Bucknell's third win over a ranked foe since 2006, and its first over a top-10 opponent.
Less than 24 hours later, the Bison were in action at Madison Square Garden as part of the Grapple at the Garden. Bucknell earned two more victories, defeating Davidson 33-6 and EIWA opponent Hofstra 25-15 to stretch its winning streak to three for the first time since February 2011.
The Bison are one of three EIWA teams in the national rankings, joining No. 3 Cornell and No. 11 Lehigh.
Sunday's win over Hofstra marked Bucknell head coach Dan Wirnsberger's 100th career victory during his tenure at Bloomsburg and with the Bison.
There will be no national poll released next week, meaning Bucknell will be listed 25th when it takes on Michigan State Jan. 4 at 2 p.m.
